Walking with Questions

A pilgrim trail for today

Rhiw-Llanfaelrhys-Aberdaron-Uwchmynydd-Mynydd Mawr

Draft, Spring 2009

Proposed Opening

on Saturday 5 September
with Bishop Andrew of Bangor
Details later.

An eight mile walk from Rhiw Church,
via Llanfaelrhys and Aberdaron,
to the old coastguard station
on the top of Mynydd Mawr,
overlooking Ynys Enlli, Bardsey Island,

A tenth of a mile
for each year of your life from birth to eighty.
Four or five steps for each week!

Ponder your lifeline.
Take your time.
Scribble in a notebook.
Share memories with your companions.

Walk towards the tip of the Llyn Peninsula,
time past slowly overtaking time future,
the sea, symbol of the eternal,
pressing ever closer,
until there is no way back,
only the unknown future.

What’s it all about?
What has it been all about?
What do I regret?
What am I thankful for?
Where did I come from?
Where am I going?
What do I want to do with the rest of my life?

The poet Rilke wrote:
Be patient towards the unresolved.
Love the questions themselves.
Realize that answers come
only when you are able to live them.
Live the questions themselves.
Gradually, without realizing it,
in the distant future,
you may come to live into the answers.
